Is being a balloon artist a real profession?
Absolutely! One of the most fun professions there is!😉 Behind every garland at a wedding lies a global industry: manufacturers, professional wholesalers, conventions, certifications, and artists with decades-long careers. In an interview with Alberto Falcone, he explains how he has been working with balloons since 1997. He ran a gift shop in Italy, attended a balloon workshop out of pure curiosity, and has never left the industry.
What makes this profession special: almost no one sees it from the outside. Before you start, you don’t really think about how balloons and decorations just appear in the room, as if by magic. Step inside and you discover a whole world of brands, techniques, art, training, and artists who truly make magic feel real.
People enter at any age and from any background. Alberto came from retail. Denise, one of the Sempertex ambassadors, entered the balloon world in 2012 and officially started her business in 2013. Audrey, also a professional, was a professional singer until 2020. When the lockdowns halted all entertainment work, a client asked if she could bring a balloon to a home performance; she spent five hours figuring out how to make something, and a new career was born. There is no standard profile. There is a teachable craft.
Which skills do you need?
After nearly thirty years of teaching, Alberto calls it the most common mistake, even among experienced artists: tying balloons too loosely together. The duplet is the starting point of every composition. View the tutorial here.
Four things are common to every professional.
- Understanding your materials. Denise calls this the skill she underestimated the most at the start: knowing why a balloon does what it does. Oxidation, friction, heat, cold. Without this knowledge, your designs will not survive.
- The duplet and the cluster. After nearly thirty years of teaching, Alberto calls it the most common mistake, even among experienced artists: tying balloons too loosely together. The duplet is the starting point of every composition; if you do it right, everything you build on it is stable.
- Construction & safety. A beautiful design is not enough: it must also be safe and stable. Especially with larger installations, you need to understand how weight, tension, attachment points, and substrates work together. A professional knows not only how to build something but also how to ensure it stays upright.
- Design principles. Think of colour combinations, proportion and balance. If it doesn't feel right, it isn't.
