Keep the temperature stable
Balloons do not like extremes. Store latex balloons between 10°C and 30°C, with as few temperature fluctuations as possible. In our own warehouse, we keep everything at 18°C, but you don't need to turn your storage space into a climate lab: a stable, moderate temperature is what matters.
Higher temperatures accelerate the effects of light, moisture, and oxidation. Very cold latex loses elasticity and becomes more susceptible to small cracks. It is better not to freeze balloons, and if they have been stored somewhere very cold, let them come to room temperature before you inflate them.
Balloons in the shade
That beautiful wall full of Sempertex colours looks great in the sun, but your balloons themselves are not happy about it. Store uninflated latex balloons in a dark or well-shaded place, away from direct sunlight: UV light accelerates the oxidation of latex.
The same principle applies to foil balloons: prolonged exposure to bright light can affect the inks and the metallic sheen.
Keep the humidity low
. Moisture is the third factor, especially in warehouses and stock rooms. Keep the humidity as low as possible, ideally not higher than 35% for packaged balloons. High humidity combined with low air circulation can also cause mould in your stock room, so a dry, well-managed space is not only good for your balloons but for your entire inventory.
Keep the bag closed
. Perhaps the easiest tip of all: store balloons as much as possible in airtight packaging. This limits contact with air and moisture and slows down oxidation. Extra relevant once you have opened a bag or take balloons to jobs and events: choose the colours you need and seal the packaging well afterwards, instead of leaving an open bag lying around for weeks. Your future self will thank you.
Rotate your stock
. Good stock management helps too. Use older stock first and rotate balloons that are in your showroom or display regularly. A simple FIFO principle, first in first out, is a good habit for any balloon business.
