What is double stuffing and how do you calculate the colour?

Double stuffing is a balloon technique where you put one balloon inside another and inflate them together. The two colours optically blend into a new shade, allowing you to create colours that do not exist as a single balloon: softer pastels, deeper jewel tones or a perfect match with your client's colour palette. You no longer have to guess which combination gives which colour: our free Double Stuffing Calculator shows the mixed colour even before you inflate a balloon.

How does double stuffing work?

The principle is simple: put one balloon (the inner balloon) completely inside a second balloon (the outer balloon), and inflate them together as if they are one. The light passes through the outer layer onto the inner one, and what you see is the optical mix of the two. A bright colour inside a transparent Crystal Clear becomes softer and deeper, two colours layered give a completely new shade.

Why artists do it: the colour range becomes literally infinite. The corporate client's brand colour, the exact shade of a birth announcement, a pastel that needs to be just a bit softer: with double stuffing, you create it yourself.

Which colour do you get?

The classic way to find a double stuff combination: tearing open bags, pushing balloons together, inflating, and hoping. Fun for a rainy afternoon, less fun if your client expects an answer tomorrow.

That’s why we built the Double Stuffing Calculator: choose your inner balloon and your outer balloon from the real Sempertex colours, filtered by texture (Fashion, Pastel Dusk, Neon, Metallic, Pastel Matte, Silk & Reflex), and you’ll immediately see the mix colour on your screen. Switch inner and outer with a click, as that order does make a difference, and add both colours to your basket as soon as the combination is right.

Tips from the field

  • Transparent as the outer layer (like Crystal Clear) is the entry point: the inner colour becomes softer and gains depth, ideal for that premium pastel look.
  • Layering textures: a matte inside a shiny outer balloon gives a very different effect than two matte colours. Play around with it in the calculator before you order.
  • Note your winning combinations with both colour codes, then you’ll build your own recipe book and recreate that colour exactly next season.

Frequently asked questions
